Gibran On Self-Knowledge

May 2nd, 2011

I have been kindly sent from Lebanon a beautiful edition of Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’. I opened it at random in the spirit of bibliomancy, and here is what I read:

And a man said, Speak to us of Self-Knowledge. And he answered saying: Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights. But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart’s knowledge. You would know in words that which you have always known in thought. You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

I find that a beautiful way of exploring the relationship between inner and outer knowing and experience.

  1. This post has really struck a chord with me. I’ve never come across the word ‘bibliomancy’ before, but I can guess what it means and it’s something I’ve been practising instinctively for years … and, most particularly, with Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’! I still have the scrappy little paperback copy I bought when I was 19 years old, and it never fails to both uplift me and make me want to cry.

  2. Thank you Philip – lovely to open my emails and find that nugget of gold <3
