For the autumn…

The Gift

Be still, my soul, and steadfast.
Earth and heaven both are still watching
though time is draining from the clock
and your walk, that was confident and quick,
has become slow.

So, be slow if you must, but let
the heart still play its true part.
Love still as once you loved, deeply
and without patience. Let God and the world
know you are grateful. That the gift has been given.

For the spring…

Spring
By Mary Oliver

I lift my face to the pale flowers
of the rain. They’re soft as linen,
clean as holy water. Meanwhile
my dog runs off, noses down packed leaves
into damp, mysterious tunnels.
He says the smells are rising now
stiff and lively; he says the beasts
are waking up now full of oil,
sleep sweat, tag-ends of dreams. The rain
rubs its shining hands all over me.
My dog returns and barks fiercely, he says
each secret body is the richest advisor,
deep in the black earth such fuming
nuggets of joy!

  1. There is certainly a rather special stillness in the Autumn, a pausing in the season of growth, a packing down of foliage, nuts to be collected and stored. Near my home in the Forest of Dean, each season seems to blend in and support each other. I witness snowdrops first, then crocus, quickly accompanied by daffodils. I acknowledge them every day I pass by and thank them for their existence. They like being talked to. Love and Blessings, Margaret.
