I was once shown a pre-publication copy of John O’Donohue’s Anam Cara by a publisher in New York. On the back cover it talked about the author being inspired by Christianity and by the Druids. I was fascinated and a few days later found a set of audio-cassettes of his lectures at the Omega Centre in Rhinebeck. His eloquence and his ability to plumb the depths of human experience were entrancing.
When the book came out, the back cover reference to the Druids had gone. I thought “If I ever meet John O’Donohue, I’ll ask him the story behind that.” That possibility has now gone with his passing…
