Requiem for Arctic Ice

August 7th, 2015

An incredible seven million people have signed a petition to ask Shell to stop drilling in the Arctic. And now they are playing a new requiem outside Shell’s headquarters in London – A Requiem for Arctic Ice. The music is poignant. Have a listen here on this clip. And you can read about the project and add your signature here.

  1. The artic ice is more extensive and deeper than it has been for years. In fact it is about the same as it was in the 1840s as a recent documentary about the Franklin Expedition and the discovery of the wreck of the Erebus let slip.

  2. Signed, commented on the Shell web page, and shared to FB. Google Earth shows the antarctic and the arctic ice masses. Compared with satellite photos from even a few years ago, it is miserably obvious that a great melt is occurring. This will have many global environmental consequences as winds and ocean currents change, weather patterns intensify, biodiversity thins, oceans rise. desperate masses of displaced people migrate and fight for remaining space and resources. Our species could have prevented the catastrophes now surely approaching. We can still mitigate the ultimate outcome, but if we continue to use coal and oil for energy, much longer, very soon now, it will be too late.

  3. What a fantastic way of protesting – intended to get people to reflect and think instead of a more standard, confrontational protest. Listen – and sign!
